Obituary: Arthur Jardine

Arthur Jardine, first Treasurer for the Jardine Clan Society

On the 7th of January 2025, in his 93rd year, peacefully at Lochduhar Care Home, Arthur Henry Gloucester Jardine of ‘Spedlins,’ Terregles Street, Dumfries, beloved husband of the late Freda McKean, much loved father of Mark and Joan, respected father-in-law of Ruth and Brian, cherished papa of Chris, Laura, Russell, Kelly and Greg, great papa of Brooke, Isla, Anna and Oliver and a loving partner of Liz.


Arthur was in at the beginning of the Clan Society. In themid-70s, when Sir William was thinking about starting up a society, Arthur, being a well-known and well-respected local businessman, was one of the prominent Jardines that he consulted. When the decision was taken to form the society, Sir William appointed Arthur to the Council. Arthur also then took on the role of Hon. Treasurer, a post that he held for several years.


His sister, the late Mrs Mary Hastings, was Hon. Secretary of the Society for some years. When Arthur eventually passed the treasurer-ship to Tom Jardine, he remained on the Council. Indeed, he remained one of the Society's most loyal supporters throughout the years.


Arthur joined his late father, James R. Jardine, in the late 1950’s, after a spell in the Royal Air Force, to become the 4th generation joining the family business. He acquired the National Diploma in Funeral Directing and became qualified to be a member of the British Institute of Embalmers. He is also a Member of the British Institute of Funeral Directors. In 1967 he was President of the National Association of Funeral Directors in Scotland. He is a member and Past President of the Dumfries Rotary Club and Past President of the Dumfries Burns’ Club. Arthur enjoyed travelling and visited Shetland every year, where he had strong family connections. On the sporting side, he was a keen golfer, but his main passion was angling. Arthur was a Church of Scotland Elder and Executive Member of the Dumfries and Galloway Chamber of Trade and Commerce and he was also a Trustee Member and Board Member of the Crichton University Campus.


Service at St Michael’s & South Parish Church on Wednesday 29th January at 3pm, to which all friends are respectfully invited to attend. Funeral thereafter private.

The cortege will depart from Lochduhar on Wednesday 29th January at 1.30pm, travelling along Terregles Street, Galloway Street and the Whitesands, – arriving at St Michael’s & South Parish Church at 1.45pm.
