A brief history of the Jardine Clan Society

Sir William Jardine 11th Baronet of Applegarth, 22nd Hereditary Clan Chief and Lady Jardine worked hard to establish the Clan Jardine Society and in 1977 the inaugural meeting took place in Lockerbie attend by 130 Jardines from all over the world. Variations of Jardine: Giardino, Gardin, Gardyn, Garden, Jardin and Jerdin amongst others.

- Norsemen (Vikings) granted lands in northern France

- Jardines mentioned in Holinshed Chronicles as present at Battle of Hastings

- Jardines arrived in Britain from Normandy, as followers of Bruce family

- David 1 of Scotland gave lands of Annandale, Dumfriesshire to Robert the Bruce 2, for service of 10 knights, one of whom may have been Jardine…

- Motte and Bailey castle at Applegarth, the Motte (mound) can still be seen in garden of present day manse, Applegarth House

- King David II awarded Sir William Jardine, 1st Knight of Applegarth a Barony and land in Lanarkshire. Still had presence in Annandale and are recorded raiding into England.

- Sir John Jardine married daughter of Lord Somerville, built Spedlins Tower in Dumfriesshire, across the river from Applegarth and lost  lands in Lanark in 1600s.

- Frequent raids over Border, there were English and Scottish armies raiding and devastating the land

- Jardines prospered as Border Family. Chiefs often had presence at Court. Following grew: at muster of men Jardines had 200 men.

- Border raids and wars continued. “Rough Wooing” when Henry VIII sent army to capture Mary, Queen of Scots. Annandale was devastated.

- Feuds raged between Johnstones and  Maxwells; Jardines mostly supported Maxwells. Sir Alexander was appointed Master of His Majesty’s Ordinance (important post). He and his wife made improvements to Spedlins Tower

- Sir Alexander Jardine, 12th Knight of Applegirth, became Baronet of Nova Scotia

- Infamous story about ghost, James 'Dunty' Porteous

- First Jardine Hall was built on other side of river

- It burnt down to be replaced by a mansion in the Palladian style

- To make money, Sir Alexander (8th Baronet) tried to develop Corncockle Quarry and connect it to main railway, which involved bridging the Annan but by the time this was finished need for red sandstone had diminished

- He got himself into too much debt and was forced to sell Jardine Hall

- Family rented various houses in Dumfriesshire but contact with estate of Applegarth, theirs since the 1200s, was lost

- Jardines continued to hold office in county and at Court, but were staunch Hanoverians and did not take part in Jacobite Risings

- Applegarth Village had at least 100 cottars living there, most of whom would have taken Jardine name

- Landlords were improving lands and enclosing fields so cottars would be encouraged to move away either to work in mill towns, Galashiels, Hawick etc. or even emigrate

- Sir Alexander Jardine, 17th knight, was responsible for improving small tenanted farms and steadings and looking after needs of his tenants

- Many families emigrated all over the world

- Sir William’s brother John emigrated to Australia and was appointed Police Commissioner in Rockhampton and was asked to establish a new settlement at Cape York

- His two sons drove cattle north for the new settlement and a river they crossed is still named Jardine River and near it is Jardine National Park.

- Another Jardine emigrated to Canada, established a lumber business which led to ship building at Richibucto

- Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet and 18th Knight became an eminent naturalist, corresponding with other famous naturalists, including Darwin, world wide

- His greatest work was editing 40 volumes of “Naturalists Library”, a series of reasonably priced books so that all could have access to natural history

- His collection of specimens, which were sent to him from all over the world, was displayed at Jardine Hall

1900s
 

- Several Jardines took part in Scottish Enlightenment

- Jardine was with Sir Walter Scot when Honours of Scotland (Crown Jewels) were discovered in Edinburgh Castle

- Jardine was Engineer to Edinburgh Water Company bringing water to the city

- Another famous son founded Jardine Matheson and Company in Hong Kong and helped British Government establish their Far East Policy

- Famous cricketer and several footballers
